
Pay-Per-Click marketing (PPC) is a way to generate traffic to your website or landing page by running small, paid ads on a search engine. When you open an account with a search engine (the main ones being Google, MSN, and Yahoo) you will bid against other advertisers on relevant keywords or search terms.
For example, if you sell CRM software then you may bid on the keyword phrase "crm software" and other closely related terms. Then, every time someone searches for that phrase on that search engine your ad will appear, usually off to the right side of the page.
Where your ad is located depends on several variables such as bid price, competition, search volume, etc. Although your ad may be shown on the page for the search term you are not actually charged anything unless someone clicks on your ad… hence the name, "Pay-Per-Click." Compare this to say, newspaper advertising where you pay just to have your ad shown whether anyone calls you or not. Once your ad is clicked on by the user then you are billed the amount you bid initially. So if you are bidding five cents a click then each time someone clicks on your ad the most you will pay will be five cents. These charges are usually referred to as "click costs".
